A toothache can manifest in the teeth or in the surrounding jaw area, and is the result of various dental problems. The pain typically starts suddenly and can range from a mild inconvenience to intense discomfort. It may come and go, or be persistent, with symptoms intensifying when eating or drinking. As the condition worsens over time, it is crucial to schedule a dental appointment promptly.

We class a dental emergency as any pain or trauma to your mouth, teeth or gums or any bleeding from your mouth. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Toothache: Pain in the tooth or surrounding area can be caused by a variety of factors, including cavities, gum disease, or an injury.

  • Chipped or broken teeth: A chip or break in a tooth can result from injury or biting on hard objects, and may cause pain and sensitivity.

  • Knocked-out tooth: A tooth can be completely knocked out due to a blow to the face or injury. This is a serious emergency that requires prompt attention to increase the chances of saving the tooth.

  • Abscess: An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms as a result of a bacterial infection. It can cause severe pain and swelling and can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly.

  • Lost filling or crown: A lost filling or crown can cause pain and sensitivity, and can increase the risk of further damage to the tooth if not replaced.

It's important to seek prompt attention for any of these dental emergencies to prevent further damage and ensure proper treatment.
